(from NY Times Feb. 7, 1903 review): "The artist spent several years in Egypt, and his experiences, with just enough authoritative facts - historical, industrial, and social - to give practical form to his observations, make a series of sketches of much literary charm. It is so utterly different from the common work of literary travelers that it seems to instruct while it merely appeals to those sensibilities which are most responsive to form, color, and human nature. It is all the same, whether we pause to hear the author relate an anecdote about a Cairo water carrier, or follow him up the Nile and through the 'Land of Ghosts,' or are introduced to a 'Fellah.' What appeals to the artist in scene or action is reflected upon the mind of the reader; and the writer's power of visualization is so sure and varied that a delightful illusion of reality is produced. Cairo is a dusty city, and once the artist and his canvas were drenched by a too ardent water carrier. The artist said: 'It does not matter.' And the water carrier blessed him fervently and called upon all in the street to bear witness that the artist, for not beating him, was a 'righteous man who has pity upon the afflicted!' That was years ago, but the artist is still known in the street as 'ragul tamaur' - the 'upright man.' The book is filled with such bits of personality, and whether the reader pauses in a bazaar, beside a mosque or on the river bank, there is always the vital touch given by anecdote or reminiscence... Mr. Kelly's pictures of Egyptian scenes and characters are too well known to require description here. But it should be said that they are reproduced in color in a manner which we have never seen surpassed in book illustration."Product details

Everything is fine except that seller did not mention that one of the first illustrations have been cut out of the book.
